About

Air Quality Monitor & Engagement Specialist (AQMES) Competency Certificate 18-Week Training Program Handbook (For Participants Ages 17–25) This 18-week program offers a blended learning experience combining virtual training, fieldwork, digital tools, and community engagement. As one of only eight selected trainees, you will build knowledge of air science theory, including pollutants, health impacts, and monitoring, while training in the safe siting, installation, and maintenance of monitors. The program develops essential skills in data collection, analysis, and quality assurance, fosters leadership in outreach and advocacy, and strengthens workforce readiness through professionalism, teamwork, punctuality, and problem-solving. Weeks 1–3: Orientation & Foundations Program overview, safety training, intro to air science, EJ in Oakland. Weeks 4–6: Air Monitoring Installation Monitor hardware/software, site selection, installation protocols, field safety. Weeks 7–9: Data Collection & QA/QC Downloading, analyzing, and visualizing data; linking findings to community experiences. Weeks 10–12: Community Engagement & Shared Governance Facilitation skills, Social Pinpoint tools, stakeholder group participation. Weeks 13–15: Outreach Campaign & Communication Designing impact campaigns, public speaking, tabling at events. Weeks 16–18: Practicum & Capstone Troubleshooting monitors, professional portfolios, capstone presentations.
